Giro d'Italia - May 27, crazy stage....

Post by leftcoaster »

I've been watching a bit of the Giro on Eurosport in the mornings, and I have to hand it to the Italians - if a stage, like today's stage 16 has an iconic climb like the Gavia, that's good, right?

But if you add another iconic climb like the Stelvio, than two is better than one so that's even better, right?

So if two massive climbs is better than one, why not add a third, Martelltal and make it even better?

Lat 4km video - http://www.steephill.tv/players/youtube ... Ww&yr=2014

Whole stage in Italian - 132kms, three massive climbs and a great ride by out local Ryder....http://www.rai.tv/dl/RaiTV/programmi/me ... 5be&page=0

So, here's a guy from Victoria, riding over three snowblown passes in the second biggest bike race around and hanging tough with arguably the best pure climber in the world...

... but go here: http://www.cbc.ca/sports and there's nothing, just a bunch of dudes hitting each other with sticks. Other outlets (Globe, TC) are grudgingly starting to give him a few inches as he makes the top 10 and improbably rises to a possible podium finish. But it's astounding how little attention this is getting.

Cleve Dheensaw in the TC (who I'm sure at one point was prepping to write the book on Ryder, like he did on Whitfield, and like his colleague Jeff Rud did on Steve Nash) saw it necessary to both open and close his article on Tuesday's inspiring ride with reference to Ryder's doping admissions.

If this is the kind of reception he's getting from home media, I wonder what the impact will be on the Tour de Vic?

I'll continue to watch his amazing, gutsy, incredible riding through the Italian Alps with a hollow feeling of resentment and bitterness—wishing I could cheer him on without reservation.
