This weekend, Friday and Saturday night is the Joy of Life Festival, Daniel Lapp's annual fiddle extravaganza featuring the BC Fiddle Orchestra on Friday night (tonight) and Jim Byrnes, a honking-good blues guitarist with Folkestra (my band) and the Joy of Life Choir tomorrow night at the First Metropolitan United Church. (Corner of Balmoral and Quadra)
Now maybe many of you aren't into danceable, joyful fiddle music, but if you've got kids and you want to inspire those kids to pick up a fiddle and play music that celebrates unvarnished joy in music, you gotta come out for one of these concerts, especially the one tonight. I'm biased as I've been living as a fiddle parent for nearly a decade but if there is one concert that'll hook your kids on the joy of the fiddle, it's the one tonight. Tickets are 20$ for adults, $10 for kids under ten.
Tonight's show is featuring many of the alumni of the BC Fiddle Orchestra, including many young folks who are among the country's finest celtic fiddlers. There are some tickets left but I think it's likely to sell out. Saturday you'll even see me on the stage bashing away at a guitar. Details here. http://www.joyoflifefestival.ca/
See you there.
