Boxing Day ride

Post by John D »

Merry Christmas to all!

Time to start planning on how to work off last night's tourtière and this evening's turkey. As per usual, the TSC Boxing Day ride will follow the Sunday route, departing the Fairfield Starbucks at 7:30am.

For anyone looking to log some extra Festive 500 kms, I will be leaving the Bucky's on Douglas (across from Mayfair) at 6:00am and riding the Sunday route in reverse until joining up with the group who are riding the regular Sunday route.

Did 40kms with Dave Spiers early this morning...the climb up Sayward was particularly fun given that I couldn't drop into my little ring. Then I found my post from last year's Boxing Day ride:

>I'll be there one way or another....even if only just for coffee!
>
>My last-minute Xmas present to myself after this morning's ride was a new front derailleur.
>Now I know why I had to do all of yesterday's ride in my big-ring, and why I kept dropping
>my chain this morning.
>
>Merry Christmas to all,

Happy Christmas, John. Christmas Day with family (along with a persistent solstice saddle sore  ) has caused me to realign my priorities and I'm bowing out of the Festive 500. But I look forward to hopefully riding long Friday and Sunday.

Have a great Boxing Day ride! I hope Santa brought you another derailleur.

Rolf, Truly sorry to hear about your Solstice saddle sores and the need to bow out of the Festive 500 this year. We hope to see you out there soon in the new year with rejuvenated buttocks and a revitalized sense of purpose. Let me make one observation, however, reiterating for the umpteenth time that I am not a trained health professional: Some might say that your new eruptions of butt-crust (which you euphemistically call ‘saddle sores’) were NOT entirely due to you sitting on your steel steed while cycling the circle-of-meaninglessness, (during a truly random and insignificant planetary cycle) but rather related to you having ridden too long in a chair, perched in front of a computer screen and philosophizing about orifices and Kant while mesmerized by the flickering lights of Wikipedia. Me? I feel there is some cruel justice being meted out to those like you who sing from a different songsheet and otherwise abjure their choric origins, and suffer accordingly.
So to show my radiant sympathy let me send you something from the nice folks down at the internet: helpful tips on confronting an uncomfortable butt …
http://www.roadbikerider.com/injuries/h ... ddle-sores

The best line from this blog is this: “If you seem susceptible to saddle sores, you may find it helpful to wash your crotch with antibacterial soap and warm water before lubing up. Dry your skin well first.”

Me? I’m going to avoid the antibacterial soap, the lube and the other new-ageish forms of saddle-sore avoidance and realign back to the primeval methods that involve a lot of chanting gutturally and rolling my eyes back into my head as I beseech the help of gods in reaching the magic 500. John, see you at Bucky’s at 6am.

Thanks for the sympathy, Alan (radiant or otherwise.) To be clear, there are no signs of infection—just "simple chafing."

Which term sums up your post rather nicely. :P

Happy Boxing Day, Tripleshotters!

Hi Chris...

Yes, that was fun! Thanks to everyone for waiting as I plodded up the hills in my big ring. Just left MEC where they fixed it for me, so I should be (slightly) faster tomorrow. By the time I get home today I should have cracked 250kms. But being the Luddite that I am, I don't use Strava so you'll just have to take my word for it.

See you tomorrow....

Dear Rolf.....Assos after ride cream....buy some. It is well worth the $20. Nobody likes butt-crust.

Thank, Anika. But 72 hours off the road bike did wonders.

Well, that, and a chatty, two-up ride in the wind trying to find Tripleshot in the dark with Alan this morning. That guy works wonders with his tongue...

Twas an awesome ride this morning with Rolf, who never runs out of telling me interesting things that I need to learn.
Back from the ride this morning while typing (I tell my kids typing is hard work that daddy makes look so easy) I became aware of a phenomenon known as the "group vasectomy" (not that I'd want to shut that door, but I am sure there are guys out there who do). So, here's grist for the mill, next time you're riding beside someone and you just wonder if they are still capable of reproduction, instead of saying "how's it going", (such a tired cliche) you might want to ask: "Been snipped? Want to do it together?"

The Christmas Jammies video is also awesome, a pleasant way to fill time between shedding the pounds doing festive miles and adding more pounds by chowing down on leftovers. It reminded me of something Rolf would make.

When you mentioned "group vasectomy", I thought you were euphemizing the impact of attempting the Festive 500 on our male club mates' sex lives.
