Sunday ride etiquette

Post by John D »

Hi all;

A few thoughts in advance of tomorrow's ride. Sunday is first and foremost a "social" ride. While that's not to say that it's not a good workout, please bear in mind the following:

As we ride as a single group the range of strengths/abilities is broader than on other TSC rides. It is therefore very important to maintain a pace that keeps the group together throughout most of the ride. If you are feeling frisky, please save it for the two designated "sprint" stretches on Cordova Bay Road and Interurban.

Last week we had "attacks" that split the group on the stretch going through Mt Doug Park (i.e. before Cordova Bay Road) and again along Wallace before West Saanich. Attacking that early (with a mixed group) results in us ending up four wide on the road, moving up and back at different speeds. If riders feel like attacking it should be done from near the front and as close as possible to the accepted sprint finish. That way the group has already been filtered to riders who have shown their intent to contest the finish are who are going at a similar speed. Attacking on Wallace has the added effect of further splitting the group when the first half makes it through the light and the second half gets stuck.

See you tomorrow,
J.
