Cycling Mysteries

How come . . .

. . . when people who have mini pumps get a flat, they always want to borrow somebody's full-size pump?

. . . riders who yell, "They're getting away" never do anything to bring them back?

. . . it doesn't get any easier when you get in better shape?

. . . riding 100 kilometers feels more satisfying than riding 62 miles?

. . . the rider you never notice is the one who wins the race?

. . . when you check your spare tube, it never has a hole?

. . . you sit on a saddle, but the saddle sits on a seatpost?

. . . the more tired you get, the less you rest?

. . . the lighter the part, the more it weighs on your mind?

. . . it always rains after you clean your bike?

. . it's always sunny when you can't ride?

. . . breaking your clavicle sounds worse than breaking your collarbone?

. . . you gain weight on a century ride?

. . . there's a headwind 75% of the time?

. . . bike damage hurts more than road rash?

. . . shaved legs look stronger?

. . . a minute is 65 seconds when you're riding the indoor trainer?

. . . you never regret installing a lower gear, but you always agonize over whether to do it?

. . . you have your best rides when nobody's with you to witness your awesomeness?

. . . the boss always enters your cubicle when you're reading RBR?

. . nobody ever suspects me of using performance-enhancing drugs?

Good link Brian. The only thing I would debate was the picture of the single pace line in the full width bike lane. Bike lanes are generally wide enough for two abreast; all motorists care about is the line.

I recall riding the bike paths in Ottawa to and from training races. If we rode two abreast, even tight to the right, oncoming cyclists would often freak out and hit the grass assuming the path was "full". Later, when they painted a centre line, we could ride two abreast with no problem. No difference in width, just the visual cue of a line. I believe the same thing happens with bike lanes. Drivers take the middle of whatever they are given, so the paint makes them move over.

It's also a good habit to ride closer together, closer to the right. If we ride wide, then squeeze up for passing cars, accidents are more likely than if we always ride tight. Maybe some bump and grind practice to be more comfortable?
