Wanted - Bike Rack

Post by Paula »

Looking to replace our rather flimsy bike rack. We would like one that goes on a hitch on the back and that we can still open the back of our 4runner when the bikes are one. Our roof rack on top of the car is often full with other stuff, so a top rack isn't feasible.

Any advice?

There is a Softride rack for 3 bikes on Used Victoria. Jeff W, I think you had written that you had one of these..

Yep, got the six bike version and it works great. Have had it for about 5+ years, no problems. As the bikes sit on the bars, the paint on the frame of my mountain bike has worn off. Might be an issue for an expensive bike. Folds out of the way so the tail gate can be used even when the rack is fully loaded. Paid $300 for it new.

I think the best rack is a Thule sidearm or Yakima front loader. Fits any size wheel and doesn't touch the frame, only the tire. They fit on the hitch load bars that Geoff described. Not cheap though. But when you have everything from kids 20 wheel bikes to carbon road bikes, to mtbs, to cross bikes with fenders, not much else will fit everything.

Edit. Can't find the Yakima version that doesn't touch the frame but this http://www.thule.com/en-US/CA/Products/ ... for-916XTR Thule does this.

Edit. This Yakima one comes close but I think it grabs the top tube. Carbon frames might not like that. http://m.yakima.com/#pn8002433
