Sunday June 17 - Early Dad's Day Ride

Post by Rolf »

There's a ride leaving Sunday morning at 6 a.m. from St. Matthias church at Richmond and Richardson, heading out to do some combination of Munns and the waterfront. Either clockwise (i.e. Goose to Munns, back along W. Saanich, Royal Oak) or getting all cock-a-hoop and going anti-clockwise (but the easier way up Munns).

Speed will be a moderate 26-28 averaged over the whole ride; we'll be moving on the flats but taking the hills at our own pace. It's definitely no-drop, but everyone gets a workout. We should be done and ready for brunch by 9 or so.

I've been out early on Munns the past few Sundays and climbing those silent hills -- surrounded by verdant forest and the furry little creatures going about their business -- it can be a beautiful thing.

For what it's worth, you'll find quite a quantity of tightly-wound, carbon-fibre-nut, non-drafting triathlete-types northbound on W Saanich from about 7:15 onward because of the Vic Tri. (The loop is a variant of Brookleigh /Old West (s/b) / W Saanich (n/b) / Willingdon / Panorama / Central Saanich / Keating / Oldfield)

It may be better to take your loop clockwise. Which, I beg to insist, is the easier way over Munn's anyway. (Munn's eastbound? Brrrrrr.)

Hi Rolf, I will try to be there, and then hopefully hook up with the regular Sunday ride on the way home.

I stand corrected; the wind was raising quite a ruckus among the Doug Firs today. And as for the furry animals: I shocked two deer whipping down Millstream Lake, one doing a panicked dash mere feet in front of me. Lister: I was grateful for our extreme-braking drills last summer, I was practically sitting on my rear wheel. I might have to buy a bell for my cockpit.

And all the pointy-headed triathletes were enjoying a mighty tailwind up W. Saanich. Hope the rest of your race went well, Paul - you looked good cruising up that hill.

>I shocked two deer whipping down Millstream Lake...

I more than "shocked" what appeared to be either a vole or a shrew as we descended Munn's yesterday morning. That's one furry little creature who won't be "going about his business" anymore!

It was mighty breezy, indeed.

I, too, thank Lister for the emergency braking drills. Volunteer marshals (trying so hard to do the right thing) forced me into a car sandwich at the lights in Brentwood Bay. I felt my rear wheel break loose, but did I wipe out?

No, I did not. I stuck my tush way out there, locked my arms, yelled profanity (followed by, "Sorrrry") and got out of there in one piece.

Thanks, Lister!

p.s. to tie this thread together, I note that I hit a slug with my precious carbon wheels. Poor wheels. ;)
