From Sidney Velo (care of our own Norm):
There are three important events for cycling advocacy within the next two weeks. Hopefully you will be able to help – and also forward this to your cycling newsletters or friends.
Sunday 22-April 11:00am: Saanich Family Cycling Festival. Some know this as the Shelbourne Police Escorted Ride. Note that later this spring, the Shelbourne Corridor Study will be released, examining how improved cycling and pedestrian facilities can be added. A large participation for this ride demonstrates the interest for better/safer cycling along Shelbourne. Detail at http://saanichcyclingfestival.ca/
Tuesday, April 24, 2012, 4:00pm to 7:30pm Bike Lanes on McKenzie, Shelbourne to UVic. There is an open house at UVic SUB. This bike lane section is independent of a round-about at improvements further east. For this section, Saanich Engineering did a computer model showing that removing one lane departing UVic and using that space to add a bike lane in each direction would not cause traffic problems. In February, they confirmed this on-the-road, by blocking the westbound lane. The budget is there, but a couple of residents complained, requiring this open house. It’s important that cyclists appear and show their support. A good overview is at http://www.vancouversun.com/travel/Saan ... id=6420959
14-29 April On-line Survey http://saanich.ca/rolston The Rolston trail in the Broadmead area was a multi-user trail until last fall when neighbors petitioned Saanich to block cyclists. Sadly, a 6 month closure was invoked. Shortly after, it was noted this was an important route for children cycling to Lochside Elementary School. For that reason, and the possible precedent that neighbors can close access to “their” trail, it’s important that cyclist voice their concern. Fill out the survey, even if you never ride there!
