Pan am trials training update

Post by Lister Farrar »

Four crazy juniors this am for intervals at 6 am at 1 degree C. Kudos to Evan, Duncan, Brenna and Alex.

And some pretty classy senior riders are stepping up to help out our juniors with their peaking program for the pan am trials Jan 27. Ex-Red Truck rider Bryson Bowers came out Saturday (on his P3 with a power meter) in the rain (no fenders on that thing either) and gently reminded Evan that 1000 watts might be a bit too fast to start a 2000 meter interval. :)

Former top junior in Ontario, now UVic student, and recent TS recruit Luke Koolman came out Monday and played the same role.

And today Red Truck's Tyler Trace (prov champ in CX and crit I think) rode over from where he lives near Spectrum school, and before his full time job, to train with Evan. Good quote from Evan: "Tyler is really nice, and my god is he strong. Like he was barely working while keeping up with me."

Thanks also to Josh who's trying to fit in a session to help too.

It takes a village...

edit:

And this from Craig Richey (Bastion winner, professional cyclocross racer http://www.craigrichey.ca/) in Belgium:

Well, that explains a lot. No wonder he easily pulled us old folks most of the way 'round Lands End and back a few weeks ago!

Bonus points this am for intervals in the snow. Liam, Duncan, Alex and Brenna, were out, helped out by Bryson Bowers. Bryson's coming mountain biking next week too, getting back to his mtb roots.

Alex is working on her legend, Man Slayer, taking a sprint off Duncan and Liam, despite recovering from the hamstring pull in Burnaby.

Brenna's working on hers; Sleeper Trainer. She gets faster, not slower, the more intervals she does in a session. :?

Duncan's my favourite though; Racer Tech. Told me this cool, super glue +drilling + mini ziptie fix for a wobbly fender mount. A kid who can ride and fix his bike. :)

Liam deserves a mention for coming after a run and soccer practice Friday pretty much turned his legs to teak. Need a name for that.

Intervals in Eric S's classroom Tuesday after school for Brenna and Duncan. Sufferfest video courtesy Brian S. Trainer for Brenna courtesy Eric Partlow. Trainer for me courtesy Fairfield cycles who had a customer donate and then they gave it to me.

And at 6am, David showed up ready for snow-cross, but then went to gloat in front of his mum and didn't ride :( . But also TS might-be rider Bryson Bowers (the cat 1 ex red truck rider I've mentioned who's helping out with intervals) tried his first 6 am ride, something that is definitely not in his nature. Sorry we missed you Bryson. You're harder than us!

Hey all you generous Victoria cyclists. Thanks a million for the support, gear, and training help the Tripleshot juniors were so fortunate to get for the Pan Am junior track champs trials Friday.

Everyone did pbs, and more importantly, learned how much it takes to step up to a goal, cram a peaking schedule into a busy student life, deal with doubts and fears, do the work, then step up to the line and produce. All while having fun.

Evan got a new 200m pb of 12.6, beat the 500m standard, and got within 1.5 seconds of the endurance 2k standard. So close. So he's going back to try again Feb 17th. Hopefully the Cycling BC camp in Palm Springs he is attending will give some speed as well as mileage.

Alex missed much of the training with school dance recital practices, but still came and gave it everything. After her ride she spent some time leaning over the garbage can, while not desirable, I'm told by locals is something of a badge of honour at Burnaby.

Brenna overcame her hesitant jump for a flying 200m pb, and came within 1.5 s of the 500 standard, and 4 s of the 2000 standard. Brenna’s also off to Palm Springs with Cycling BC.

Duncan had a flawless ride, his perfectly timed jump and 200m pb belying his inclination to be a climber. He aspires to climb AND sprint (like Erinne).

Keep you posted on Evan. Duncan, Brenna, and Alex are first year juniors, so there's next year. Once they forget the intervals in the cold early morning rains of January...:)
