Tandem rides?

My wife and I just got ourselves a tandem. Anybody else have a tandem? Anybody know of any tandem or tandem friendly group rides?

That is awesome. There are lots of tandems in the tripleshot crowd. Alan, Norm, Scott and I all have tandems. And I think I am leaving at least one person out. We ought to pick a Sunday (in teh summer if I am to convince Karen to come out) and we can do a Tripleshot Tandem ride!

In the meantime you definately have to take part in the Northwest Tandem Rally. See; http://www.nwtr.org/2009/ Norm has done it before and as its in Vicotria this year how do we say no?

I've actually got two tandems, (makes up for the fact some of my bikes only have one wheel!) and would be happy to lend the extra tandem to any couple that wants to give it a try. I know Chris Watt was showing some tandem interest, so we should also shanghai him for a Triple Shot Tandem Sunday. Any other takers want to try, give me a call. Be warned, tandemming isn't for everyone, but it is certainly worth a try, because you can fly on them!

Yup, I'm riding again, I've had the cast off for about two weeks. Been riding for a week... I'll probably be out Tuesday morning.

If there are any tandem wannabees out there, now is the time to do your patriotic duty and do your part to stimulate the economy by going out and buying one.

This is a Burley, similar to my own, and a steal at $2200.

Dang- Roland you beat me to the punch on that tandem- enjoy. I'd definitely be interested in a tandem ride. Hope to get back out soon, (insert standard lame excuses here)especially since haven't seen a fracture/serious injury report in at least a couple of weeks- must be getting safer out there!

Eva the Great is my 16 yr old daughter we are riding our 5th sunday AM in a row tomorrow morning if anyone is interested in joining us we could start a tandem thing we have been meeting the sunday group every second week and trying to keep up on the shorter route tomorrow we are going around the peninsula likely without the others

Does anybody have any tips?

For starting off, I hold the bike, Katie clips in, I clip in one foot, yell "3, 2, 1, go!" push off, pedal like mad and pray.

We also tried both clip in left foot, both push and pray even harder.

For stopping at stop signs, do you both clip out or does the stoker stay clipped in?

Can you get moving again smoothly and quickly enough that nobody on the sidewalk laughs?

Oooh, the slagging continues. I'll have you know Pete my wife and I rode our first tandem from where we bought it in Halifax to Victoria (more than 6,000 kilometers) without a single accident or mishap and I was totally in control. One thing newbies on tandems need to know is that there are two positions, the Captain and the Stoker. The Captain steers, shifts, and pedals. The Stoker only pedals, looks at the scenery, complains with such memorable zingers as "Why can't we have holidays like other couples?" and generally hands the Captain chocolate and water. It's like being on a ship--it's fairly simple as long as you know who is in charge.
