Junior project bike

Post by Lister Farrar »

Found a good mid-level Cannondale cross frame on used Victoria, and Alex and her dad are interested in it for bad weather and 'cross if we can build it up cheap.

Got:
  • ultegra 'experienced' 9 speed shifters from Fairfield;
  • wheels from Barton or Peter, need re-rimming (depends which we can get rims for)
  • knockoff spd pedals
  • a selection of longish stems, but might need a shorter one (Alex is more legs than arms)
  • have an ok cassette (12-23), but would prefer something with a 25 or 27
  • cantilever brakes from Roland
Need:
  • cranks and BB, 170 or 172.5, prefer compact 34-48, or 34-50
  • bars prob 40 cm, maybe 42, prefer non-anatomic (for better hand reach)
  • saddle
  • seatpost (checking now for size)
  • chain
  • front and rear derailleurs, tiagra level ok
  • tape, cables (black probably)
  • fenders and flaps
  • tires and tubes
Budgeting about $5-600, frame is $350 unless the seller comes down.

Found a crank in Vancouver. Anyone going to be there?

seller is here: "work at corner of Georgia and Denman downtown, or live on 18th and Main street."

I'm working downtown Van next week from Tuesday night to Thursday night. Hook me up, Lister, and I'll grab it.

Thanks Rolf. Which location is good for you?

Also found a rear derailleur at 51 and Fraser. Possible? Or should I ask if he can bring it closer?

I'm at the Four Seasons both nights, without a car. So if they can come and leave it with the front desk, that would be marvy. :P

No, I don't mind tracking the crank down either place. I'm downtown anyway so Georgia & Denman is fine, and I used to live at Main and 19th, so also wouldn't mind checking out my old 'hood and picking it up from his home in the evening.

51st and Fraser might as well be Inuvik, but I could meet someone downtown.

Easiest might be just to give him/them my e-mail address and we can work it out. But make sure you're totally happy with what they're selling beforehand -- because I'm not qualified to assess the suitability of any bicycle component. I still think "crank" refers to a Schedule 1 narcotic.

Thanks Brad!

I'll be round on the weekend with the two pairs of wheels to discuss rims. The ultegra wheels look challenging: they're tubeless compatible. How the heck do you get the nipple out? Or is that a cut-the-spokes-only option?

Okay, call me first. Busy birthdays weekend. Yup, plural. My Wife's turning the BIG F*UR-ZER* , and well, I"m just getting closer to the big 5-0. Sat/Sun. I'll be out at Adrenaline Zip Saturday, so probably best to pop over either tomorrow, Friday, or Sunday after the club ride.
