Saturday May 7th

Post by Greg Miller »

Good Saturday turnout today including some new faces - Matt and Rick - and some TS'ers coming back out. Nice to see Rolf out again and Rob Hasegawa. While the roads were wet, the rain wasn't much more than a drizzle for the first while then cleared up towards the end. We had over 12 for a while, some turned at Mattick's, others crossed at Island View. 6 of us remained to go around Lands end, West Saanich around the airport to East Saanich and back out around Wallace to Interuban. Ended up doing short paceline for most of the way back. Leftcoaster Dave was riding strong and is looking good for the Eddy Merckx 160k event in Pentiction this summer.

Yes, It was a good ride. Nice to get out Saturday early for a change. I had to duck out at Mattick's and head home. It was just myself and Tony, who turns out lives just up the road from me, so we had a nice chat along Oldfield, then West Saanich, Interurban, Goose and home up Lochside and back to Caddie Bay. 72 km was just what I need and had time to grab a coffee before heading home to take my son to Lacrosse at Bear Mountain.

I guess it was too early at Mattick's to catch heck from the Security guard. We stopped there briefly, as usual.

I backed off just after we crested the hill up Arbutus and we turned onto Gordon Head. I had noticed my heart rate was quite elevated earlier so I was keeping an eye on it. My HR hit 198 at the top of the hill and should have been closer to 160. Fortunately, Rolf backed off too and escorted me home then my wife took me too the hospital. Everything checked out ok. It might just have been the residual affects of a two week cold. I'll check in with my family doc this week.

Thanks, Barton.
