300k on Saturday

Post by conway »

The weather forecast for Saturday was sunny so I decided to tackle the "Hills are Alive" 300k Randonneuring brevet. The ride lived up to its name. For those who like climbing this is the route for you. After riding up to Land's End one made a right turn on Prospect Lake Road followed by a ride up Muns and then the climb up the Malahat. After riding the country roads around Duncan, it was back down the Highway to the Cobble Hill Turn off to Shawnigan Lake. This part of the route I found tough. First it was up the Shawnigan Hill to the top of the Malahat and then to Sooke/Otter Point via Humpback Road. At 268k a right turn was made on to Gillespie and a great ride down the hill. My exuberance was short lived as the Gillespie and East Sook Road hills had to be tackled. With these out of the way it was now plain sailing with the wind behind my back as I rode up the Gravel pit hill and then the Lagoon hill.

The ride stats are:

Total distance 325k
Average speed: 22.57 kph
Top speed: 63.78 kph (Gillespie)
Elevation Gain: 4405m or 14,452 feet as recoded on cycle computer. The route sheet indicates 10,00 feet+ as calculated by Google maps.

Time on bike: 14.39 hours
Total ride time 16.10 hours.

A big thank you to all the Tripleshot riders, who helped and encourage me over the past three months. This help and encouragement, made me faster and stronger, which enabled me to complete the 300k ride.

Wow Mark, now that's one helluva ride! But I think you got things backwards...YOUR words of encouragement, your ability to bounce back from a serious cycling accident, and the example that you set each week has been an inspiration to many of us TSers.

Congrats on the 325km!

Mark, what a great ride and thank you for the report. I have yet to break the 255k mark in one day. That being said, there is definitely magic in those miles; it changes you physically and mentally in a way few other experiences can. It is almost a rite of passage, marking the shift from one type of cyclist into another. You have my respect. Glad you are part of the club.
