Re: Vittoria rubino pro or continental gator skins?
I've used both. As to which ones to get, really depends on the intended use. I use gatorskins on my winter bike which only sees the crappy weather when road hazards are more prevalent. A solid durable tire with good puncture/cut protection. On the downside, they're heavier (at 280g) and don't corner...

Re: Wednesday Hills, Jan 12
I was out walking the dogs at 10:30 last night. Everything was white with about 1"+ snow on the road. Figured this am was a lost cause.
Rolling out of bed at 6:30 to find it was completely gone was bit of a surprise.
I suspect others had similar expectations, given the turnout....

Re: Wheels
(oops, just re-read and saw you were asking for experience with either of those wheels. Sorry for the spew  ) I'll take any advice that is offerred. Last year when I was looking for faster wheels I settled on a pair of Dura ace 7850s http://www.bikecyclingreviews.com/Shimano_Dura_Ace_7850_Car...

I'm in the market for new wheels, so looking for some advice. These aren't something that are going to win me any races, so I'm looking for something that provides a balance between weight and durability. Currently looking at Shimano Ultegra (1652g) or Easton EA90 SL (1532g). I'm not a weight weenie...

Re: Ryder's Tour de Victoria Registration Opens Mon. Jan.10-
I have to say that even when you run a not-for-profit race, you have huge overhead costs to cover, not the least of which are I don't think anyone is disputing the fact that it takes a substantial amount of time and money to put on an event like this, and in the end, recouping costs is not guarante...

Re: Sunday Ride?
It was snowing a little bit this morning when my wife took my daughter to work (6:30am), so I skipped the morning ride and went in the afternoon. Around the airport, back along our usual wallace/west saanich/interurban route and around the waterfront. Clear everywhere except for a sketchy bit on wal...

Re: Ryder's Tour de Victoria Registration Opens Mon. Jan.10-
I thought it was going to have a race component, which would have made it that much more challenging. Given that it's just a "ride", I'm left to ponder whether it's worth $175. Not really all that concerned whether the race if for profit or charity (although I would probably pay more for a...

Re: saturday sufferfest
I was the caboose on the pain train today (yes, that little car at the back that does nothing) Sylvan, Josh were fine engines, as was mocha house guy (who, by the way, is Peter/Mike size and most excellent to draft behind). Temperature was very very cold and actually dropped during the ride, but the...

Re: The Race Tent thread!
Played some more. This one is consistent with the back of the jersey, and gets rid of the black background which I think would get hot in the summer.

Re: New racers: Interest in VCL 'C' group, or modified 'B'?
What I think the C’s (or anyone considering starting racing) should be doing is recognizing that you are going to get your buts kicked mercilessly in every race you attend that has someone in it that is stronger/smarter than you I think we all share the same mindset that a good old fashioned thrash...

Proof of tetanus vaccination would have to be a requirement.....Lister Farrar wrote:It's all how you look at it. Label it "Gritty Urban Cross" and it starts to look pretty good. Nothing like garbage truck effluent to sharpen up those bike handling skills.

Re: New racers: Interest in VCL 'C' group, or modified 'B'?
The story I heard was that a car got onto the circuit, it was hit, some riders were injured and lost equipment, and the fuss got it all shut down. I don't know if it was the drivers fault, the marshals fault, if marshals were there, and whether the sanction and insurance was in place (eg protecting...

Re: New racers: Interest in VCL 'C' group, or modified 'B'?
Hate to be the party pooper, but..... The "fairly quiet road" in the above posts is also military property (belmont park). I would think any activities without sufficient permission would likely draw unwanted attention from the MPs. As per the industrial park: Not sure about the quality of...

Re: New racers: Interest in VCL 'C' group, or modified 'B'?
Pretty sure the roads off Wilfert are Armed Forces but there have been races there in the past. I remember doing a crit in the parking lot around the warehouse in the mid 90's (I think that was the DND crit that sylvan mentioned in a earlier post). Can't remember who organized it though. http://maps...

Re: New racers: Interest in VCL 'C' group, or modified 'B'?
I'd be fine with the modified B idea for Caleb Pike, provided the no-draft rule applied after the split. I find the B finishes are pretty chaotic to start with and tend to back off as self preservation mode kicks in. Adding slower inexperienced riders would make it that much worse. I don't see the n...
