I've been racing with D, but I do usually end up with a group of C riders, so C/D group sounds great to me (also, you can't race down a level, but you can race up if you feel fast )

I have a tacx flux2, it seems to work really well, I like that it doesn't use rolling resistance - I actually take my rear wheel off and skewer the bike onto the trainer (https://tacx.com/product/flux-2-smart/) so no requirement for a trainer tire. I have three old cross tires which I have not used for a long time.
I can't say that they are good tires (not sure), but if you need a spare they might be worth it, and they are free for the trouble of picking them up.
